Almas en Camino (Whispers Between Worlds) is a poetic documentary by Juan Escobedo that journeys through the sacred landscapes of Oaxaca, where memory, ritual, and ancestry converge. Moving between the ancient Zapotec sites of Mitla, Yagul, and the remote cruciform tombs near Xaaga—including the enigmatic La Cruciforme de Guirún—the film weaves together oral histories, lived experience, and spiritual reflection. Currently in progress, a rough cut of the film was screened alongside the filmmaker’s sculptural works inspired by Oaxaca and its traditions at El Camino College Anthropology Museum, with a concurrent solo exhibition at the campus library. Through intimate encounters with guardians of tradition and evocative sculptural forms, the film explores the unseen connections between the living and those who came before. Almas en Camino becomes a meditation on identity, loss, and belonging—an invitation to listen closely to the whispers that guide us between worlds.
